aluminum travels

Because it's still snowing (freezing temps all week), I've been dreaming of hitting the road to warmer lands.

This wouldn't be just any road trip, it would be in my vintage Airstream.  Preferably one that's been redesigned by Kristiana Spaulding.

Lovely, yes?
Check out her other trailers too.

But really, as long as my destination looks like this:

...I'll be fine.
Any takers??

It's my birthday tomorrow.  Maybe there's one already waiting for me.

heroism

Our hearts break for the people of Japan--tragedy upon tragedy with no end in near sight.  Oh Lord be merciful.

We know there are many opinions being thrown around--the who, where, what's, when's and why's.  The consequences may be massive.

Yet hope remains when there is bravery and sacrifice.  Out of the East pours the spirit of the West.

We trust that the sacrifices made by these 180 workers will have tremendous results.  May their valor ripple through our world with more power than any earthquake and tsunami.  Single events such as this, where individuals choose to deny themselves, have turned the tide of history.

May the rest of us'continue to live well' indeed.

oh yoko

Currently working on a Cajun dinner party--ettoufee, crab dip, collard greens, shrimp cornbread...the works.
(total count: 5 onions, 4 green peppers, 4 jalapeƱos, 4 lbs of shrimp, 2 lbs of celery.  I'm expecting it to be delicious).

While elbows deep in the spicy madness, I have itunes set on shuffle.

This song just came on and shot me back to Hillsdale days.  Esp of driving around with AH and KP with the speakers blaring.  And Wes Anderson films.

Good times Yoko.

for our children

A lot of things have me thinking about our future children.  I'm not one to moon over the topic of popping out babies, but my husband has rubbed off on me; I find myself wanting to be prepared and not just flying by the seat of my pants as I'm typically prone.

(I should clarify when saying I don't 'moon over popping out babies'.   I can't wait to have children and raise them with my godly husband.  It's today's sentimentality over 'having the perfect baby in the perfect hospital room with the perfect little going-home outfit while the perfect mini-van holds our perfect car seat that safely carries our perfect baby all the way to our perfect little house in the suburbs' that makes me nauseous. Buuuuut, this is a subject for another time.  Back to the topic at hand.)

While life will always have new lessons, where truth and philosophy are ever more reconciled, I'm learning as much as possible.  Right here, right now.

So, to quickly recap what's brought our future children to my mind:

*The afore 'blogged about' Climacus Conference.  Wonderful speakers and topics.  Also, I really enjoyed the attending families who brought their children.  There's a sweetness in listening to a lecture entitled "Inheriting Twentieth-Century Christian Humanism" while watching small children amuse themselves while wandering about.

*Louisville, KY.  My hometown hosted the conference.  It was a delight to travel down south.  I've never yet found a city with the same mix of delightful southerness, quirky small businesses, west-coast cool, family friendly vibe and beautiful neighborhoods (including downtown lofts, historic houses and country estates).  Throw in a strong pinch of local art and music and you have my favorite city.  We could raise a family there...

*Eighth Day Books -my new favorite book supplier- had a marvelous selection at the conference.  I snatched this book up the moment I saw it (and then waited patiently in line to purchase it, because I am a good citizen).

The book is both beautiful and frightening, funny and deadly serious.  It addresses many issues that have gripped the mid-west suburbs.

*And finally, Touchstone Magazine.  I received my first paper-copy of the magazine at the conference and will officially subscribe to it this week.  I've been keeping up with their online publications for a while, but now  need to start collecting hard copies.  I like the feel of paper in my hands.

*Oh and also, read this article:'The Romance of Domesticity".  The author, Nathan Schlueter, is a beloved professor at Hillsdale College.

Here's to raising our future generation in the fear of the Lord with the determination to lead the 'Good Life'.

Blanchett the beauty

Cate's dress last night had fashion critics split down the middle.  Half put her at the top of Best Dressed; the other threw her into the bottom of the Worst.

I put her right at the top with the best of the best.  She dressed perfectly to her style and personality, which is more than can be said for most.  I've always thought it better for people to either really love or really hate what you wear...and least it's more exciting than all of the safe options that make us say 'meh' (I'm looking at you, S. Bullock and A. Hathaway).  I would wear the heck out of this dress.

And who doesn't love that smirk?  It's the perfect accessory.

Westminster Dog Show

We were so happy to hear about 'Hickory', a Scottish Deerhound, winning Best in Show.  Despite the Terrier bias that Westminster tends towards (as well as many other dog show organizations), this gentle giant came from 60-1 odds to take it all.

This breed is a close cousin to our dream dog--

The cutest thing ever.

We're rather tall people so we figure we need a rather tall dog (which is why of course we currently have a 2.5 lb chihuahua).  I guess you can't press that logic too far....

Here's a beautiful sideshow of the dog breeds at Westminster.  It's amazing to see the variety within domesticated dogs.  A dog for every man.

What's your favorite?

so we can all have the same song stuck in our heads

We kind of like it best when bands are ugly (in our world of 'boobs and botox' or 'ironically rolled jeans and flannel').
We also like such a big group effort...it brings Was Not Was and Polyphonic Spree back to our minds.

Enjoy your Thursday
